GST updates new
The Government of India has announced Next-Generation GST Reforms, calling it a “Historic Diwali Gift for the Nation.” These changes were approved at the 56th GST Council meeting held in New Delhi, with a clear focus on easing the lives of citizens, supporting businesses, and boosting the economy.
GST (Goods & Services Tax), first introduced in 2017, has been simplified further to ensure:
Lower tax burden on households
Affordable healthcare & education
Support for farmers and small businesses
Boost to Make-in-India & Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision
Everyday household items such as hair oil, shampoo, toothpaste, soaps, ghee, butter, cheese, utensils, and sewing machines now attract only 5% GST instead of 12–18%.
Health & Life Insurance: Now fully exempt from GST.
Medicines & Life-Saving Drugs: Reduced to 5% or NIL GST.
Medical Devices like glucose monitors, diagnostic kits, thermometers, and corrective spectacles – now at 5% GST.
Tractors, tractor tyres & parts: Reduced from 12–18% to 5%.
Agri equipment like irrigation sprinklers and harvesting machinery: 5% GST.
Fertilisers & inputs: GST cut from 18% to 5%.
Exercise books, notebooks, maps, pencils, and erasers – all reduced to NIL GST.
Two-wheelers, small cars, three-wheelers: Down from 28% to 18% GST.
Electronics like TVs, ACs, dishwashers, and projectors: Reduced from 28% to 18%.
Cement, a key driver of infrastructure, also reduced from 28% to 18%.
Beyond rate cuts, the GST Council also introduced major ease-of-doing-business reforms:
Automatic registration within 3 working days.
Provisional refunds for exporters & small businesses.
Launch of Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) for quicker dispute resolution.
These reforms directly reduce the cost of living, help middle-class families save money, and provide relief to farmers, students, and small entrepreneurs. By simplifying the tax structure into just two main rates (5% and 18%), GST has become easier, better, and simpler.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called these reforms “a gift for every Indian this Diwali,” noting that they will make everyday items cheaper and give a major boost to the economy.
The Next-Gen GST Reforms are not just about tax cuts—they represent a step toward a more inclusive, transparent, and growth-friendly economy. For households, businesses, and entrepreneurs, this means reduced costs, better compliance, and new opportunities for growth.
